What to expect at Guangdong Museum

Guangdong Museum was first built in 1957. The Guangdong Museum and its Guangzhou Lu Xun Memorial Hall were officially opened to the public on October 1, 1959. Guangdong Museum was originally located on the former campus of Sun Yat-sen University at 215 Wenming Road, Guangzhou (on the site of the former Guangdong Tributary Academy), covering an area of 43,000 square meters. In addition to Guangzhou Lu Xun Memorial Hall, Guangdong Museum also included the site of the first National Congress of Kuomintang, a national-class protected heritage site (including the Revolutionary Square), and the Red Mansion, a provincial-class protected heritage site.

At the beginning of the 21st century, in light of the museum construction boom nationwide and the need to further develop Guangdong Museum, the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Guangdong Provincial Government decided in 2003 to commit RMB 884.2 million to build a new facility for Guangdong Museum. The new facility is located within the Cultural and Art Square in the southern part of the central district of Zhujiang New Town on the new central axis of Guangzhou. Guangdong Museum consists four sections devoted to history, nature, art, and temporary exhibitions.

The new facility showcases the history and culture, art, and nature of Guangdong. The exhibits are arranged in the principles of functionality, cost-effectiveness, originality, and soundness and in informative, scientific, and artistic manners, reflecting the uniqueness of Lingnan culture and the standard of the items in collection at Guangdong Museum.
