Full Itinerary
You will be collected from your hotel at your preferred time in the morning. After about two & half hour driving, you will reach Jinshanling Great Wall where you will begin your adventure. The Jinshanling section has a total length of 11km with intact watchtowers almost every 100 meters. As you walk south, the Jinshanling Great Wall becomes less renovated, tourists become sparse and new views unfold. Just before you reach the restricted military zone you need take a detour of the wall and climb up a hilltop where you will have a fantastic 360 degrees view of the Great Wall winding on the mountain ridges. Then you will follow a 5-km trail that curls alongside the wall, over the hills, through a small forest and pops out of the bush at the General tower of the Gubeikou Great Wall. Here you have reached the highest point of the day and another magical place for pictures. The Winding Dragon section and Crouching Tiger section of Gubeikou Great Wall are stretched out in front of you. You will hike the Gubeikou Great Wall till the 5th watchtower and take a small dirt trail down the ridge, through the bush till you reach a small lake where your driver will be waiting for you.

Jinshanling Great Wall
First constructed by General Xuda in 1368, then largely repaired, renovated and expanded by the legendary General Qi Jiguang in the 1570s, the high-quality Jinshanling Great Wall is named after the beautiful bigger and lesser Jinshan Mountains where the Wall is located at. The 11 km long wall offers enough space as soldiers shelter, warehouse and arsenal of weapons along with 5 passes, 67 towers and 2 beacon towers. Hence, the Jinshanling Great Wall became the section with the most complicated structure and most densely distributed lookout towers. Altogether, there are 158 lookout towers in various styles along the wall. Some of them are made of brick and wood, while others are brick and stone structures. The pier bases, like the roofs come in various shapes and sizes. Other constructions include night-watch towers and storage buildings that are rarely seen at other sections of the Great Wall. Various unevenly distributed constructions along the Jinshanling Great Wall form the perfect defense system.

Gubeikou Great Wall
Gubeikou has long been a town of military significance and important pass to Beijing. The Yanshan Mountain winds from east to west and is cut off at Gubeikou, forming a natural narrow pass here. The main part of today's Gubeikou Great Wall runs for more than 20 km. It has 143 beacon towers, each positioned at an average interval of 156 meters. The nearest two are only 30 meters apart. The inside of these towers varies in design. While some have a flat ceiling, others either have an arched ceiling and a domed ceiling, or an octagonal, painted ceiling.

This hike is real. Just be warned that this is a real hike and it is challenging. There are steep climbs and descends in rubble and slippery areas, hiking shoes are a must. Our tour guide Michael Li was very knowledgeable about the Great Wall. (Posted on 6/25/2019)
