After getting settled at the hotel, you may explore the downtown area on your own or relax during the remainder of the day. Day 2 Lanzhou, Gansu Provincial Museum, Waterwheel Garden, Iron Bridge of Yellow River, White Pagoda Mountain, Bullet Train to Zhangye
Morning visit to Gansu Provincial Museum. The most famous collection of this museum is the 14cm-tall Flying Horse of Wuwei. This outstanding bronze horse has become an iconic emblem of China. Racing through the skies, it treads on a swallow (base of statue) that looks up in amazement. Unlike Pegasus, the Western flying horse, the wingless Han steed is meant to be understood metaphorically rather than literally; it represents an ideal horse that can gallop so fast that it seems to outrun the wind. Then visit Waterwheel Garden, the oldest irrigation tool along the Yellow River. Afterwards, visit the Iron Bridge of Yellow River and White Pagoda Mountain. Completed in 1909, the German-made Iron Bridge of Yellow River represents the first permanent bridge built on the Yellow River. White Pagoda Mountain affords a great bird's eye view of Lanzhou City. Later, you will take a bullet train to Zhangye (4 hours) and you will be transferred to hotel in Zhangye.

Meals Included: Breakfast at hotel
Hotel: 4-star Dinghe International Hotel Zhangye or similar

Day 3 Zhangye, Rainbow Colored Mountains, Giant Buddha Temple, Bullet train to Jiayuguan
Morning visit to Rainbow Colored Mountains located inside Zhangye Danxia Geopark. Covering 200 square miles, Zhangye Danxia Geopark was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The Danxia landforms are made of strips of red sandstone alternating with chalk and other sediments that were deposited over millions of years, like slices of a layered cake. They are a geological wonder of the world known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains. Then you will visit the Giant Buddha Temple. Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), this temple is home to the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China. The temple itself is one of the largest remaining relics of the Western Xia Dynasty. This Giant Buddha Temple is also believed to be the birthplace of Kublai Khan. In the afternoon, you will take a bullet train (1 hour & 30 minutes) to Jiayuguan and you will be transferred to hotel in Jiayuguan.

Meals Included: Breakfast at hotel
Hotel: 4-star Holiday Plaza Hotel Jiayuguan or similar

Day 4 Jiayuguan, Jiayuguan Fortress, Wei & Jin Tombs, Overhanging Great Wall, Drive to Dunhuang
Morning visit to Jiayuguan Fortress. Jaiyuguan Fortress is the most western end of the Great Wall. Also known as "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven", this pass is the best preserved and most magnificent military building among the three passes of the Great Wall. Located at the narrowest point of the western part of Hexi Corridor, Jiayuguan Pass is a key passageway of the ancient Silk Road. It commands fascinating views of the boundless Gobi Desert and the snow-capped Qilian Mountains. Then we will stop by the Overhanging Great Wall. When viewed from afar, this part of Great Wall of China looks like it is hanging over the mountain tops, giving it the name Overhanging Great Wall. Later, proceed to Wei-Jin Mural Brick Tomb, a huge tomb group of more than 1,400 tombs built between the 3rd and 5th century and houses vast collection of murals. Drive to Dunhuang (4 hours), the most important city along the Silk Road where silk Road split into its southern and northern routes either side of the impassable Taklamakan Desert.

Meals Included: Breakfast at hotel
Hotel: 4-star Silk Road Hotel Dunhuang or similar

Day 5 Dunhuang, Magao Caves, Singing Sand Dunes, Crescent Moon Lake
Morning visit to Mogao Caves. Mogao Caves, also known as the Dunhuang Grottoes, boast the largest collection of Buddhist grottoes in existence in China. Housed in the 492 cave temples are over 2000 sculptures and 45,000 square meters of frescoes dating back as early as one thousand years ago (covering a period of ten dynasties). The statues are painted and carved directly into the cave walls. The most famous aspect of Dunhuang's grottoes is the murals that feature Buddhist stories, folk culture, farming, hunting as their main themes. The caves was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. In the afternoon you will have a camel ride on the scenic Singing Sand Dunes, called by Marco Polo as the rumbling sands. Then relax at the desert oasis, the Crescent Moon Lake, a small freshwater lake that has been a vital source of water here for thousands of years.
