Litchi Bay
Litchi Bay, located in the Pantang region, the west of Liwan district of Guangzhou, is the hinterland of the time-honored Xiguan City. Along the bank of Pearl River, this millennial attraction is the home to celebrities of different dynasties, and a showcase of Lingnan Culture, such as Xiguan Resident Community, Five Treasures of Xiguan, Xiguan Delicacies, and Cantonese Opera. Numerous gardens and courtyards were successively built by royal families, government officials and wealthy merchants of various dynasties. It has won such fame as ‘Little Qinhuai’ and ‘Top Resort of Linnan’. Liwan district carries out overall environmental improvement works in 2009 and 2010 for Asian Games. The major historic sites include: the Liwan Lake, Ren Wei Temple, Wen Pagoda, Mansion of Chen Lian Bo (the first national capitallist), and Jiang Guangnai (Member of the National Committee of CPPCC), Little Painted Boat Studio, Haishanxianguan Garden, etc. In addition, various local activities like March 3rd temple fair and Dragon Boat Racing are held. With a strong flavor of history, culture and folk customs, the Litchi Bay is therefore known as Xiguan Culture Exposition in Lingnan.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
Built in 1894, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a place for your historical travel where you can see unique ancient Chinese architecture arts. Since 1959, the Chen Family Temple has been established as Folk Art Museum to exhibit folk arts of Guangdong province. Being the biggest, best-preserved and most gorgeously decorated traditional building in Guangdong Province, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a symmetrical complex comprising 19 single buildings which are connected with verandas and interspaced by courtyards. The entire building is decorated with arts including skillful wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, lime sculpture, pottery sculpture, iron and copper casting, and color painting.

Whampoa Military Academy
With post-imperial China carved up among different powerful warlords reigning over independent areas of control, Sun Yat-sen and the young Republic of China government needed more than lofty ideas about national unity and a renewed country. With help from the Soviet Union, the Nationalist Party of China Army Officer Academy was built on Changzhou Island. Known more commonly as the Whampoa Military Academy, Sun established the school in 1924 to train cadets that would go on to take part in the Northern Expedition, a military campaign to take parts of China under the control of various warlords and place them under the control of the Nationalist government. Chiang Kai-shek was made the school’s first commandant while future Premiere of the PRC Zhou Enlai was made the director of the political department. Just twelve years later, the Japanese destroyed the Whampoa Academy, but it was restored in 1965 and is now a museum on Chinese military history. Bicycle rentals are also available on the island (they can be found near the pier) and make for a good way to explore.

Huangpu Old Port
Huangpu, pronounced Whampoa in Cantonese, a small village on the eastern edge of Pazhou island was the seaport of Guangzhou since the Song dynasty. Between 1757 and 1842, it was the only Chinese port open to foreign trade. Huangpu is no longer an important seaport. Nothing remains of its past except two museums which explain the importance of Huangpu for Chinese trade. The history museum in the heart of the ancient village of Huangpu does not mention opium and emphasises on how this village on the Pearl River was at the convergence of East and West. Bearing Huangpu’s past in mind, it is a great experience to saunter in the network of narrow streets and alleys that crisscross the village. They are lined with a dozen of ancestral hall and temples, or ancient schools and official buildings all built in the local Lingnan architectural style which, according to local history, originates from the nearby village of Shawan.
